Our Diving: A Better Deal Closer to Home
Dive South Georgia and Save
Why waste time, money and gasoline driving to south Florida when you can find great wreck and reef diving much closer to home? The port of St. Marys, Georgia, provides you with easy access to the best diving in southeast Georgia and northeast Florida. Here you can enjoy moderate temperatures and good visibility year round. (See dive site map.) |
Wreck Diving
Brunswick, St. Marys and Jacksonville have been busy seaports since the 1600s. (St. Marys is the second-oldest city in the USA.) Storms, collisions and other mishaps have led to scores of wrecks. While little remains of some of these vessels, others are surprisingly intact. Fishing boats, freighters and warships now lie waiting for you to discover. |
Artificial/Manmade Reefs
Both Florida and Georgia have extensive artificial reef programs. Ships, barges, planes, subway cars, battle tanks, and wharf rubble have all been used to provide a foothold for coral and a haven for fish. The region now boasts the East Coast’s largest collection of artificial reefs — and the fish populations reflect this. |
Natural Reefs and Ledges
The St. Marys region provides divers with miles of natural reefs and ledges. Five-foot reliefs are typical, providing a home for coral, fish an invertebrates (think lobster, folks). |
Spearfishing/Lobstering
If you are into spearfishing, we have a treat for you! Large Grouper, Snapper, Cobia, Amberjack, Flounder and Sheepshead await you. With the vast number of wrecks and ledges and the small number of divers, spearfishing is always a crowd favorite. For you lobster fans, Lobsters can be had year round — both Spiny and Slipper. (Licenses required.) |
Fossil Diving
Fossilized shark teeth — and particularly those of the Carcharodon Megalodon (a “Super” Great White) — can be found throughout the region. Among the best hunting grounds for these and other fossils are the dark waters of the St. Marys River. (Check out our special Fossil Dives.) |
